The Light Between The Stars

Listen to the storyThe Light Between The Stars

Far beyond the edge of any known galaxy, where the stars themselves seem to whisper ancient secrets, stands the cosmic lighthouse. It is not a structure made of stone or metal, but of light itself—an ethereal beacon floating in the void, radiating a glow that can be seen by souls wandering between the worlds of the living and the dead.

The lighthouse is tethered to no physical realm, existing in a space where time stretches and bends like the curves of a distant horizon. The keeper of the lighthouse is as ancient as the stars, though he does not belong to time as we know it. His form is difficult to comprehend, shifting like the light of the nebula that surrounds him. Sometimes, he appears as a tall cloaked figure with hands made of star dust, his eyes reflecting the infinite depths of space. Other times, he is simply a presence—warm and comforting, but vast, as if the universe itself had taken notice of you.

The lighthouse keeper's world is a space between worlds, a place where the boundaries of existence blur. The nebula swirls around the lighthouse in colors that have no names, hues that pulse with the rhythm of a slow cosmic heartbeat. The air is weightless, and there is no ground to stand on—only the sense of endlessness beneath and around.

The souls arrive here, not in ships or by any means of travel we could imagine, but as glimmers of light that float towards the beacon, drawn by a need to move on.

One night, a new soul drifts toward the lighthouse. This soul, a faint shimmer of silver, hovers just outside the light’s reach, hesitant. The lighthouse keeper watches, as he has done countless times before. His voice, though never spoken aloud, fills the space between them.

"You are here because you are ready to move forward," the keeper says, his words gentle, like the sound of distant waves.

But the soul does not approach. It flickers, as if confused, unsure.

"I cannot move on," the soul responds, its voice soft, filled with the weight of something unresolved. "The one I left behind... they are still grieving. I need to go back to say goodbye."

The keeper’s light seems to flicker, understanding the soul’s sorrow. This is a request he has heard many times before. Souls often come to his lighthouse with the same plea: to return just for a moment, to comfort the ones they loved in life, to say the words they couldn’t say before the end. But the lighthouse keeper knows the truth of such desires.

"If you return," the keeper says, his voice as vast as the nebula that surrounds them, "you will only deepen their sorrow. The living, when they know the dead can return, will never stop yearning for you. They will hold onto their grief, waiting for another visit that may never come."

The soul shimmers, its light dimming slightly as the weight of the truth settles in.

"But they need to know I am still here, that I haven’t left them."

The lighthouse keeper moves closer, his form shifting and swirling with the stars.

"Your presence is already with them, in ways you cannot see. You are part of the light that shines down upon them, the warmth they feel in moments of peace. To return would be to bind them to their grief, preventing them from finding the path forward."

The soul hesitates, but then the keeper raises a hand, and the space around them ripples.

"Look," the keeper says, and before the soul’s eyes an image appears—not of the present, but of the future. The one the soul left behind is there, standing beneath a sky filled with stars. Though there is sorrow in their eyes, there is also hope, a lightness that wasn’t there before. Time has passed, and with it, the heaviness of loss has softened. The living one smiles, remembering the love they once shared—not with pain, but with peace.

"You see," the lighthouse keeper whispers. "In time they will heal, but they cannot do so if you remain tethered to them. To let go is not to forget. The love between you will remain unbroken, but it will transform. It will become something that guides them forward, just as you must move forward now."

The soul watches the vision, its light beginning to glow brighter. The longing to return fades, replaced by a quiet understanding. The living must heal in their own time, and the dead must allow them that space to grow. The bond between them is eternal, but the path forward requires trust—trust in the resilience of love, and in the ability of the living to carry on, even when the ones they love are no longer by their side.

"I understand now," the soul says, its voice softer, calmer. "I must move on."

The lighthouse keeper nods, his form shimmering with the soft glow of stars.

"Yes, your journey continues, as does theirs. Love does not end with death, but it changes just as the stars change in the night sky."

And with that, the soul drifts closer to the lighthouse, passing into its light. As it does, the nebula around them swirls and expands, the colors growing brighter, more vivid. The soul moves forward, not with sorrow, but with peace—ready to begin the next part of its journey.

The lighthouse keeper watches, as he always does, his light casting a soft glow over the vast, incomprehensible beauty of the universe. And in the distance, far beyond the reach of the lighthouse, the living one sleeps under the stars, feeling a quiet comfort, as if they have finally been touched by the light of something greater.

As you lie here, think of the lighthouse keeper’s light—a light that guides us when we need it the most. Think of the bonds you share with your loved ones. Love never fades, like the lighthouse keeper’s guiding light. Those we’ve lost are always with us, quietly watching over us from the stars, patiently waiting to reunite with us.

Take comfort in the knowledge that love transcends time and space. Breathe deeply now and let that warmth settle in your heart. Allow the peaceful light of the stars to guide you into a restful sleep. There is no rush. When you are ready, simply let go.

And drift into a place of quiet, cosmic peace.

Good night.
